The T-72B3 Obr. 2016 is an improved evolution of the earlier B3 upgrade, introduced to address mobility and protection shortcomings while further enhancing combat effectiveness. Key improvements include the more powerful V-92S2F diesel engine, providing better acceleration and off-road performance, and the addition of Relikt explosive reactive armor on the hull and turret for increased protection against modern anti-tank threats. The tank retains the 125 mm 2A46M smoothbore gun and Sosna-U fire-control system, but adds refinements such as a rear-mounted slat armor cage and improved optics. Overall, the Obr. 2016 represents a more balanced and combat-ready modernization, bringing the T-72 platform closer to contemporary main battle tank standards.
