M113A1G Panzermorser 120mm

The West German M113A1G Panzermörser 120 mm was a purpose-converted mortar carrier that turned the roomy M113 APC into a mobile, protected indirect-fire system to support Panzergrenadier units. Built by converting existing M113 hulls and fitting them with a 120 mm Tampella-type mortar and associated stowage and fire-control gear, the Panzermörser provided rapid, highly mobile mortar fire while protecting its crew from small arms and shell splinters. Entering service in the 1970s–1980s and later receiving modernization packages (NDV/upgrade programs), the vehicle typically carried on the order of 60–70 rounds and gave commanders a short-to-medium-range (roughly 4–7+ km depending on ammunition) indirect-fire option married to mechanized formations. Deployed at company and battalion level, the M113-based Panzermörser became a pragmatic, cost-effective way for the Bundeswehr to field organic heavy mortar support without developing an entirely new chassis.
