The West German Jaguar 1 (HOT), officially designated Raketenjagdpanzer 3, was a dedicated tank destroyer developed during the Cold War to provide NATO forces with a highly mobile and lethal anti-tank platform. Based on the chassis of the Kanonenjagdpanzer, the Jaguar 1 replaced the earlier 90mm gun with a sophisticated HOT wire-guided missile system, giving it the capability to engage and destroy enemy armor at ranges up to 4,000 meters. Entering service in the mid-1970s, it was operated by the Bundeswehr’s Panzerjäger units and featured enhanced armor, a low profile, and advanced optics to increase battlefield survivability. The Jaguar 1 exemplified West Germany’s emphasis on precision and mobility in its armored doctrine, serving effectively throughout the 1980s and early 1990s until replaced by more modern missile carriers like the Jaguar 2 and Wiesel-mounted systems.
