The Marder 1A3 is the major late-Cold War upgrade of Germany’s Marder infantry fighting vehicle, produced as an improvement package from the late 1980s to strengthen protection and keep the chassis effective alongside modern tanks. The A3 retrofit added roughly 1.6 tonnes of applique frontal armor designed to defeat 30 mm cannon fire, rearranged hatches for crew and dismount safety, and reinforced suspension, brakes and drivetrain to cope with the extra weight — while retaining the 20 mm Rheinmetall Mk 20 autocannon, coaxial MG3 and capacity for a three-man crew plus six infantry. These changes made the Marder 1A3 a more survivable, still-mobile IFV that remained a backbone of Bundeswehr mechanized infantry units and has since been exported and further modernized in limited numbers.
