The T-72B3 Obr. 2011 is a modernized variant of the venerable Soviet T-72, introduced by Russia to rapidly upgrade its armored forces while retaining a proven chassis. The upgrade centers on the Sosna-U digital fire-control system with thermal imaging, significantly improving target acquisition and night-fighting capability, alongside updated communications and navigation equipment. Retaining the 125 mm 2A46M smoothbore gun, autoloader, and Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armor, the T-72B3 Obr. 2011 offers improved lethality and survivability, though with minimal changes to the original engine and protection layout. It represents a cost-effective bridge between legacy Cold War armor and more advanced designs like the T-90 series.
