The M577A2 Command Post Carrier is a specialized variant of the M113 armored personnel carrier, designed to serve as a mobile command and control center for U.S. Army units. Featuring an enlarged aluminum hull with greater internal height, it provides space for map boards, radios, and planning equipment, as well as folding tables and seating for staff operations. The vehicle is typically equipped with a large, easily erected tent extension at the rear, which expands its working area in the field. Though lightly armored and unarmed except for a defensive machine gun, the M577A2’s primary role is to give commanders a protected, mobile headquarters from which to coordinate combat operations, making it a vital asset for battlefield organization and communication.
