The M163A2 Vulcan Air Defense System was a self-propelled anti-aircraft weapon based on the M113 armored personnel carrier chassis, fitted with the M61A1 20mm Vulcan Gatling gun. Designed to provide short-range air defense for U.S. Army ground forces, the M163A2 could deliver an extremely high rate of fire against low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and even light ground targets. The A2 upgrade improved reliability and mobility, keeping it compatible with modern armored formations. Although limited in range and eventually overshadowed by missile-based systems like the Stinger and Avenger, the M163A2 offered rapid, suppressive firepower and remained in service through the late Cold War as an important layer of close-in air defense.
