The Soviet BTR-60 R-975M was an upgraded command and reconnaissance variant of the classic eight-wheeled BTR-60 series, adapted to improve battlefield coordination during the Cold War. Retaining the vehicle’s distinctive twin-engine layout and amphibious capability, the R-975M incorporated enhanced communications gear, map boards, and additional radio systems that allowed commanders to direct motor rifle units more effectively on the move. While its protection and firepower were modest—typical of early Soviet wheeled APCs—the R-975M’s value came from its ability to keep command elements mobile, connected, and forward-deployed alongside frontline troops.
