The T-55AM was a significant modernized variant of the iconic T-55 main battle tank, introduced in the late 1970s to extend the platform’s combat relevance. It featured enhanced protection with explosive reactive armor (ERA) on the turret and hull, improved fire control systems, and a more powerful engine for better mobility. The T-55AM retained the reliable 100 mm D-10T2S main gun while adding upgrades for more accurate gunnery and night fighting capabilities. This modernization allowed older T-55s to remain effective on modern battlefields, and the T-55AM saw widespread use across the Warsaw Pact and in numerous export armies worldwide.
