The T-55A was a key modernization of the Soviet Union’s highly successful T-55 main battle tank, introduced in the early 1960s to improve crew protection and battlefield survivability. The A variant incorporated enhanced radiation shielding through internal anti-radiation lining and redesigned crew hatches, along with updates to its fire-control elements and machine-gun arrangements. Retaining the reliable 100 mm D-10T2S gun, robust diesel engine, and low-profile silhouette, the T-55A continued the platform’s reputation for simplicity, durability, and ease of maintenance. Widely exported and produced in large numbers, it became one of the most recognizable and enduring tanks of the Cold War.
