The Soviet ZSU-23-4M “Shilka” is an upgraded variant of the iconic self-propelled anti-aircraft system designed to protect armored and mechanized units from low-flying aircraft and helicopters. Retaining the original quad 23 mm autocannons with exceptional rate of fire, the M modernization improved reliability, fire-control electronics, and radar performance while reducing maintenance demands. These enhancements made the Shilka more effective against fast-moving aerial targets and even lightly armored ground threats. Rugged, mobile, and feared for its volume of fire, the ZSU-23-4M remained a key part of Soviet and later Russian short-range air-defense doctrine for decades.
